River of Time features works by Chinese artists, Huang Min and Ma Jun. In this exhibition, both artists  use tradition in new ways to think about the past and its relationship to both the present and the future.

Huang Min’s works illustrate everyday people standing at the railing of a riverfront promenade, with their backs turned to the viewer as they take in the glorious view before them.  Most of us are drawn to the glories of nature, compelled to witness firsthand the immensity of nature’s grand panoramas.  But in her work, Huang Min has substituted landscape panoramas of the Yangtze River for classic scenes of Chinese landscape painting.  By replicating these masterworks in her own paintings and giving them a contemporary context, Huang Min reaffirms the on-going relevance of traditional belief structures in contemporary life. Ma Jun uses traditional ceramic techniques to make a tangible link between the past and the present.  He uses porcelain and traditional glazes in forms that are undeniably modern and based on the latest fads of consumer culture.  Although his cards, television sets, soda bottles and other products are not functional, they emulate the aesthetic qualities of the past.  His work questions what it is we find valuable in today’s contemporary culture.
