This publication was published as the catalogue to the exhibition, Une Ode de Madagascar held at Osage Gallery fom 01 June to 30 June 2005.
Une Ode de Madagascar marks the first solo exhibition of Madagascar artist, Chan Sicpo, in Hong Kong.
Chan, who prefers to be referred to only by his surname, pronounced in the French manner, is 76 years old and was born in China. The Sino-Japanese war drove his family to send the then 10 year-old boy to Madagascar where he eventually carved a name for himself in the gemstone mining industry and became very successful.
He has a penchant for anything beautiful and has exquisite tastes. He traveled all over the world when he has a chance and the experience provided him with insightful inspiration which he translated onto his canvases.
Being self taught, Chan’s art is uninhibited and defies authority. His strokes are broad and forceful. The vibrant and dynamic colors used in his abstract works are reminiscent of precious gems like sapphires, rubies and emeralds and the impressionist works leave little to doubt the idyllic and leisurely lifestyle of the Malagasy people. His paintings explode with a unique mixture of colors, often inspiring and stimulating the viewers’ senses.
